What dies NIH in NIH 3t3 stand for?
I have an assignment about NIH 3t3 and have to just talk about what it is and such. however no matter where i look all i can find is what 3t3 stands for. i tried just searching NIH and found it saying its the "national institute of health". so does that mean its a cell the NIH owns and the 3t3 is the actually name of the cell?
thanks for your answers

The original 3T3 cell line was developed from cells grown from a mouse embryo using a specific procedure of dividing the cells every 3 days and plating them at a specific concentration. The 3T3 comes from that protocol. This was a rather early line of cells and was derived from outbred mice. A later 3T3 line was derived using the same procedures but from an inbred mouse strain called BALB/c. The NIH-3T3 cells were derived from a Swiss mouse embryo using the same type of procedure.

While NIH usually refers to the US "National Institutes of Health", in this case, it refers to the NIH Swiss mouse strain.
3t3 refers to the the protocol for culturing embryonic fibroblasts: "3-day transfer, inoculum 3 x 10^5 cells".
