Why am I so misunderstood?

Ok, let's start with this proposition: I am a teenage male just trying to find my place in life. When I was little, I was a shy kid who was really serious. Now that I have "grown up" [used loosely], I have become a little less serious. I can still be introverted, but not shy.

Anyways, according to my family, I am categorized as the kid who is like one of my uncles. Unfortunately, one of my uncles that I am "alike" to died of a heart attack and was known to be serious and a loner.

I do not want to be known as that to others. I just want to be a normal dude. I try to take life a little less seriously - however, whenever I try to be funny, my mother nags that I think "everything is a joke."

I don't understand what people want from me. Do I be serious or relaxed?

I can't exactly be too relaxed since I am very serious about school because I want to get into the best university possible and succeed. I just want to succeed.

So, I don't know whether to take life less seriously or not. I fear that relaxing will affect my future success and staying serious could affect my reputation and health.

Find a balance between the two. Act each at the appropriate time. Humans are complex, we don't have to be either one or the other, you can be a bit of both. One of my teachers was bigging up this student who came back to visit her and was doing well in Uni etc. and she said "You see, that's why you should get a balance in your life, if you want to succeed then you should work hard, but you should also take out extra time for yourself and do things you enjoy", or something along those lines :)

You don't always have to joke, just smile more, have a good sense of humour (it'll be much less annoying for your mum if you laugh or smile back at jokes instead of constantly say them), and just act calm, cool and collected as a soft exterior for people to witness, hold back on both your seriousness and relaxedness to the outside world, so you don't give off the undesired impression and after the rest of the world is sorted, just know inside, that you're a bit of both.

I can observe through your style of writing you seem quite rigid and serious-like, all you have to do is be just that, and then just change a few details to relax more e.g. add :) where appropriate, you don't have to organise your paragraphs perfectly etc. etc.

The teenage people are generally be sentimental and emotional. Don't care what others are saying about you. But take care about what you say.
