It is not unusual for a guinea pig to lick but it is by no means universal. There are 2 common reasons why they do it. The first is social. Guinea pigs will sometimes groom each other as a means of positive social interaction and bonding. I expect that even though your guy is new to you he is feeling comfortable with you and showing it by grooming you. Sometimes they also lick you for the salt that is on your skin from perspiration.

Guinea pigs are lovely pets, and some will lick you. This can often be a sign of affection, or could also be him licking the salt off of your skin. (mine used to lick me when I was sweaty in particular). Nothing to worry about, it quite cute really :)
