What to do when random people ask you for money?

Like I go to Harlem. I usually give beggars money when they ask for it but recently I have stopped because you dont know whether they are lying or telling the truth. Today I felt so guilty when this old guy who looked healthy to me and he asked me for a quarter once and I said no. I had a twenty dollar bill. Then I was going to the subway station and he was near it and then he asked me again I said "that guy just gave you one quarter how many do you need?" And he said something that kind of made me guilty. He said: "Ok never mind if you don't have a care in the world about 2 children I need to feed that's fine." Do you think he was faking or is he up to something?

Yeah I see what you mean. I felt guilty as once when this chick walked up and asked for some bus money I said no but later I wished I did. The look on her face when I said it was what made me feel guilty.

Now I always give my money away, I don't have much myself but money doesn't mean sh** to me. A few nights ago I went to the gym at 9pm and came out 12:00am. Where my car was parked I could see a man searching in a bin and when he saw me he kinda acted like he wasn't.

I grabbed a 50 dollar note out of my car walked over and said are you hungry? here man go get something to eat. He wouldn't stop saying thank you and it bought a huge smile to my face.

Usually if someone asks for money I'll have a quick observation of them and if I feel and can see they need it I'll give them money.

It sounds like he was guilt tripping you obviously. You did the right thing by not giving him anything, do not feel guilty. You are the better person here. If the person has a good vibe and seems genuine I would give them something but nine out of ten times I am faced with the former, the con-man, guilt-tripping, egotistical, entitled, swindler rather than the person who is sincerely down on his or her own luck and actually does need the help. I always trust my gut instincts around people.

I'll tell you this; have you ever seen that South Park episode where the town is being taken over by homeless people? Do you want that to happen to Harlem? LOL

The guy sounds like a pro -- which means basically a full-time con artist, albeit a small-time one.

They know exactly what to say to trigger your bourgeois guilt.

Ignore them, or pepper spray them.
