I see it like this - most people WANT to believe in a higher power. We want to know that everything is alright and at the end of the day someone/something is looking out for us and it will all be okay. It stems from a need to be loved and feel as if we have a place in the world. The ideas of god that we know these days stemmed from a very few group of people. A small group of men wrote the bible/quran/torah, according to what THEY would like the world to be. Maybe the idea of god wouldn't be so ridiculous if say we all got together and 'democratically' decided what we would like god to be. The idea of god in the modern day is failing because we are trying to apply principles set down by poorly educated men from thousands of years ago and make it work for us today
