In the movie, The Book of Eli, is Denzel Washington's character supposed to be blind?

SPOILER ALERT! In the end when you find out that the binle he is protecting is written in brail, are you then to believe he is blind? I mean, we see that his back is all burnt in the beginning of the movie, making it apparent he was caught in the "flash" that everyone refers to that blinded so many people. So was he blind the entire time as well? Making the significance of the movie that he was able to go through all of those fight scenes and walk all of those miles on faith? Im pretty sure, i just need some confirmation here, thanks!

Eli was blind before the flash. His other senses on the other hand are heightened from being blind , he does not depend on vision like most people.

Yes, Eli was blind the whole time. I really noticed it better in the 2nd time I saw the movie.
