How much do I tip my tattoo artist?
I'm getting a tattoo that will cost 150 total. I'm a poor college student and I've been saving up for this for awhile so I can't tip too much but I always think its polite to tip. Its a design I came up with from Catcher in the Rye.
Thanks!
Don't tell me not to get it..I've been wanting this for 2 years and I finally have the chance. I understand your opinions but I'm not asking for them.

I can understand what is like getting a tattoo on a budget. You have saved and deserve the tattoo.
Generally artists are tipped about 20%. For this tattoo that would be $30.00. However artists in college areas are used to not getting full percentage tattoos. Please try to give at least $20.00 and if this is a good artist give them the best recommendation you can for future work.

I have 5 tattoos and I always tip.. 3 of mine cost between $180 and $220 and I have $50 for those 3. My 2 smaller ones I tipped $20. I don't think a lot of people tip their tattoo artists though because even though I go to the same guy every time he seems shocked and always asks if I'm sure about my tip. Just use your judgment if you want to tip. It's completely up to you.

Being poor is no excuse for being cheap or have bad manners. If you will tip 15% for a waitress to walk a salad across the room, then at least 20% for someone who will change your life for the better.
Artists remember who tips and who doesn't. If you like the artist and design you will get another one. How an artist feels about someone always affect the design and amount of effort they put into any tattoo. It's just human nature.

I have never heard of tipping a tattoo artist until I wandered into this section. I have several tattoo artists in my family and have hung out with them as they tattoo person after person after person not once getting tipped.
if you want to tip go ahead but there's no set amount

As a general rule, you are not required to tip a tattoo artist. Tattoos are almost pure profit and the tattooist probably won't do more than a few hours' worth of work. When an artist gives you a quote, the amount they tell you is the amount they expect to receive. Unless your artist went above and beyond what he/she was required to do or unless you feel that he/she genuinely undercharged you, then you are not supposed to tip! Anything extra is beyond generous. Why do you want to tattoo your body if you don't have extra money. Is it really necessary? Those $150. could help you on any emergency in college. Why don't you hold on the tattoo for a while until you graduate and get a job?
If you are so proud of your design from Catcher in the Rye, print T-shirts and sell them, but do not tattoo your body.
Love yourself by respecting your own body.
