What´s the point in my ticking "stay signed in"?
Why can I not stay signed in if I leave the page for 10 minutes to look at another site?

Ticking the stay signed in is there so you don't have to sign in every time you switch on but if you go to another operator you are automatically signed out So the tick is just for the Original site

Most of the time it works for me but, at times, a glitch occurs. Could be Yahoo gets jealous of you going onto another site.
