How long does a total loss insurance claim take?

Hi. I was in an accident last Tuesday, so 9 days ago. Yesterday it was determined that my car was a total loss. I'm not at fault for the accident so how long will it take for the other parties insurance to pay me for my vehicle? I know that trying to get insurance companies to pay up can be like pulling teeth but they are paying for my current rental so wouldn't they lose more money if they lag the payment? How long does it usually take? Thank you.

Very few motor claims are settled within 30 days! And there certainly isn't a 30 day rule in the UK

Check with your own insurer and make sure that your hire car will be provided continuously - some insurers only offer 21 day provision after a total loss.

Ask them for regular weekly updates on the claim, and make sure that you know exactly where things are up to.

If there is no doubt regarding liability then there is no reason why it can't be settled within a week or two. However, if there is any doubt about liability then it could be dragged out for many weeks. Make sure that you keep on top of it and supply any details promptly.

The Ombudsman is there to help if you feel that the claim has gone on for an unreasonable length of time, or if you don't feel that your insurer is fighting your corner for you.

    Usually it's about a week.
