Using a 1 bed apartment as a 2bed - how to arrange living room?
My fiance, my 2-year-old and myself are currently living in a 2 bedroom apartment. We were looking to possibly move into a 1 bedroom apartment and split the living room into a bedroom/living area as we don't often have guests. I know that I've seen this done, but I am unable to find the right keywords to locate the layouts for this situation.
We are currently living on a single low income and looking to become more frugal and fully utilize our living space.
Thanks in advance, and links are encouraged!
The room wouldn't be separated, but I've seen spaces be used as both bedroom and living space fluidly. The bedroom would be used solely by my daughter.
One last thing, the apartment that we were looking at is fully carpeted, minus the bathroom and kitchen. The layout isn't all that great (not exactly an open layout) and I'm also unsure of how well things like the suggested bookcase separation would work in our situation.
I do appreciate all the comments, they have been very helpful. The top answer will receive 5 stars, and I do wish that I could offer the same to the rest of the contributors. Thank you again for your help and support.

Before you go too far with this plan, check with potential landlords on whether you can do this. Some cities have strict requirements on how many people can live in an apartment of a given size. That is, it's possible that 2-4 people in a family group requires you to rent more than 1 bedrooms.
If you can move into a 1 bedroom, any splitting of a room into 2 would require a temporary wall of some kind, which wouldn't block much noise from the living area. Who would be sleeping there? If you're saying the 3 of you would share the one bedroom and just need a guest room occasionally, just get a sleeper sofa or a sofa that would be long enough for someone to sleep on.

Three options.
Sleeper couch or chair. Comfortable seating during the day and a bed at night.
A Murphy Bed. That is a bed that folds up into it's own closet during the day.
Folding screens to section off a part of the room. Relatively easy and inexpensive to make. Use 3 or 4 tall shutters hinged together.
Sorry you have to move out of your 2 bedroom. Even a 2 year old needs space and privacy.
Good luck

If you google for studio apartment or efficiency apartment decorating ideas, you should find some good ideas. That's essentially what you and your finance will have (not counting your daughter's room), a studio/efficiency apartment. Hotel rooms are also a good source of inspiration for combo living/bed rooms.
Some ideas:
1. Match the blankets and pillows on the bed to the couch/chairs to make it look like one complete room.
2. Make sure you have enough storage furniture to keep the room super tidy and help you feel less like you're living in your bedroom.
3. Use a storage ottoman as a coffee table. It architecturally mimics the shape of the bed. And it's nice and puffy if your toddler crashes into it.
4. Take a tip from hotels and combine your dresser and entertainment center into one (large) piece of furniture.
Here's a link to get you started. I like rooms #3, #20 and #24 for your situation.

You can divide the space up with a tall bookshelf or even a curtain .
or
use a pull out sofa.
