What smells do cats not like?

I have 2 very cheeky cats who jump everywhere and who have broken some valuable and special stuff.

We can't close the door to that room because the door won't close properly, and they know how to open doors anyway.

What scents do they not like? I heard somewhere that suchandsuch scent liquid they don't like and will stay away. Although I forgot the name and scent!

What scents will they keep away from and if possible, will not destroy wood, or stain material such as carpet?

Thanks!

Cats usually don’t like the smell of anything they don’t eat.

My cat particularly hates the smell of any citrus (lemon, grapefruit, orange) and toothpaste (she runs away when I brush my teeth) and any perfume (French perfume, lavender, Cologne).

She stays away from me when I’m all smelling good before going to a party…

My kitten had a phase where she would clear out all the shelves and break some stuff (a lamp, a rotisserie).

My advice is to put everything on the floor.

It cannot go lower than that.

Check out each garbage pail before you put it outside, you might have some stuff in there too.

  • Cats usually dislike citrus and menthol scents. However you need to be cautious using scent deterrents as some oils and fragrances are highly toxic to cats and if your two aren't put off by the scent, they may end up accidentally ingesting some of the fragrance oil/liquid. Some scented oils and liquids may cause colour damage or staining to wood or carpets too.

I'm not sure which type of valuables you're trying to protect, but if it's things like ornaments, collectibles antiques etc., you should try using museum putty to keep them secured in place. Many a cat owner has found it very effective in preventing breakages.
