Why american showers usually don't have a detachable shower head with a long hose?
The shower heads in the wall aren't really practical for a real personal hygiene. Americans should change it!

Hi There,
The reason is most likely that the showers having detachable heads with hoses cost more money.
Builders do not spend money they do not have to.
By the way....I changed mine to a detachable model and like it much better than the old one that was fastened to the wall.
Have a great day,
Al

Unlike most of the world, Americans bathe daily. Therefore we do not need a jet of high pressure water inches away from our skin to get a build up of filth and crud off. Most Americans find it perfectly acceptable, as well as efficient, to use a fixed head and both hands to wash. If you're finding that your "real personal hygiene" is suffering from a fixed head shower perhaps you should try bathing more often or use a garden hose.

All of mine have a detachable shower head on a hose. Some even have "pulsating" jets. I guess the previous owners were fans of "real personal hygiene", as you put it. It also makes it a snap to rinse out the far reaches of the tub after cleaning.

Simple, money. American's always have the option to buy their own detachable shower head if they feel the need to. They also have the option of turning the water off while lathering up. Luxury is an option, not a standard.

Money, and European culture. In Europe there are fewer tubs because bathrooms and living quarters in general are smaller, so it's more advantageous to have a flexible hose. As Americans we settle for cheap construction, crappy windows, cheap door hardware, low insulation values, so it is natural to accept something that doesn't perform ideally. Europeans have adjusted to limited space, American's would rather have big stuff that is lower in quality, so long as it's cheap.

You can get that kind in America, but it's true that most showers don't have them.
It's a matter of preference and of cost.

You can get them as an aftermarket option. Costs money to make them standard.
You can get them for about $20 at most hardware stores...
