Does this poem have a message "Empty"?
If I could find life's reason
It'll be buried under the dead
No time to escape its treason
The Earth must always be fed
I'll give no thought of distance
For we have traveled far
And learned the art of resistance
As we followed the furthest star
The depth of our humanity
Only as deep as the mud we'll walk
As we argue over our insanity
Words have no meaning, it's all talk
We use to climb high mountains
To see what's on the other side
Now we search for homes with fountains
With tall walls to hide inside
I claim no knowledge or wisdom
Nor understand the cause
The day mankind succumb
To his spirit's self-applause

You know you're getting really good at doing that belly-punch ending. Yes, it has a message, and you delivered it with a smooth pen.
That one line - 'the depth of our humanity, only as deep as the mud we'll walk', is a thorn to the heart; if we really do possess humanity, we do more than just 'talk' about it. Or, at least, we should do more.

Fredric
Your poem has a true message to the core of every man
and woman's heart, but right now I am looking even further
beyond and seeing how you get your poems to stay here,
and am looking at your questions. Always good ones and
valid to the piece.
I see class envy as a major problem in the country I live in.
There simply are not enough rich people to be mad at, yet
they pay 95% of the Federal Income Taxes in this country.
It really bugs me that almost half pay $0.00 where is the
fiscal responsibility to save.
You would be surprised at what one can save, but I see many
of the poor, at least in my city, with many material things, all
new, all nice. What I do see missing is a traditional family or
a Mother or Father of any kind.
Greed can be found in rich and poor, it is an equal opportunity
destroyer. One thing for sure, we (many of the folks in our
country) are hurting, and I see trouble ahead.
Very good poem, sorry answer is a bit long, just evoked some
thoughts, that's what good poems do.
Congrats

Wow! A most powerful poem Frederic.
I must say I disagree philosophically to a point, since I don't necessarily see those who have enough money for a fancy water fountain and a high walled private home equates with spiritual 'self-applause' (meaning spiritual degradation and emptiness). Many people in all levels of wealth are kind, generous and giving, and philanthropic not only in our country but in others as well with their great great blessings, helping others in a myriad of ways across the globe.
We are, however, continuously fed by the media in our own society (based on the actions of a few) and painted as a view of "the wealthy", (which is nothing more than a generalized stereotyped term), as ALL being basically without soul, without redeeming value. That's just not true as it pertains to ALL, but with that said and pointed out, I am appalled as you are with those ultra riche who do genuinely fit the portrait you have skillfully honed here in this piece as soul less and without heart or pity regarding the world around them, which I think you mean to represent here.
Your poem, is hard and loud as any sign carried by a street protestor and is fantastically written and just another reason why I much value this work and its author. Write On!

Yes it does. More like "emptying." One song goes: "As soon as we are born we start dying." It seems as though....as we try to "survive" -to improve our lifestyles, it seems to have adverse effects as well.
One would think...we'd have less reason to fight. That we have become more "civilized" over the years, and as the seconds pass by. And yet there are people who justify wrong things... What is acceptable changes as well.... little by little.
Just as we try to fill life... we end up emptying it. Perhaps the answers lie beyond death... And some people may come to realize that the life they lived, may not have been so full of life at all...
As population in the world continues to increase... the more blood is spilled, the more need to try and bypass nature and the ecology. As this world fills with "lives".... they more people fight over resources, the more they abuse resources...
The 3rd stanza reminds me of an old law of sorts. Where two suspects of a crime are put to "trial." They would be kept under water in rivers or so. The first to emerge is the guilty one.
Overall a very insightful and powerful poem...

It certainly does bear a message fredric;
one of our slowly, like a land slipping into the sea,
lost our free-ness and our exuberance/ s, to the pull of the era`s
strange quest for `the best`, on mankind`s stranger terms
than we really understood.
Stanzas1 and 4 are remarkable yet -
I sense a lack of self- forgiveness
at so human/ self-immolating, a mass-failure...
we are each implicated with you,
just as you reach each of us with pathos and your understandings. - TY -
I`ll folder this one, for sure.
You don`t have to c-c it
but I think you`ll very well understand my in-awful-metre poem
just on-line, entitled, `When`..it might be deleted, might not be.
For yours, which does merge with our being/s- in my experience that is
9.5.
