How do I clean burnt on food from a cast iron skillet?

I was always told that SOS pads and the like were off-limits to cast iron cookware, but, a house guest recently used my cast iron skillet and had the heat too high. Now I have a mess of onion, mushroom, butter, and steak burnt onto my skillet.

Any advice.

Warm the pan with some oil in it. The warm oil will loosen the food. Scrape it with a metal spatula. Then sprinkle in some coarse kosher salt. Crumple up a paper towel and use it with the salt to scrub the pan. Finish by wiping the pan down.

The easiest & best way to clean cast iron cookware is to put it in a selfcleaning oven and set the timer to run a regular cycle. You will then need to reseason the pan. But it will be very clean, and your elbow grease won't be used up.

Soak, scrub, and re-season. Scrub with anything that works, and SOS pads work.
