Is it moral for me to prevent a rape if I can, or to wait until the end of the rapist's life and burn him?

Why is it wrong for me to not prevent a rape if I can, and burn the rapist in my basement later, but when God does it, it's the pinnacle of morality?

What if I don't prevent the rape because I don't want to interfere with the rapist's free will?

What if I work in mysterious ways that are beyond your limited moral comprehension?

Update:

@Dawn: You don't know me. How can you possibly justify the claim that I'm part of the problem? Even if you're right, it can only be by accident. You know absolutely nothing about me.

While you may have an elevated sense of morality, more acute than that of the average respondent on Yahoo Answers, it is ignorant to compare yourself to God himself in that way. You're not special, and you're not that mysterious.

If you truly understood the God described by most religions, you would know that you as a human are flawed in your thinking, decision making, and perception of morality. You are not in any position to question what God does or compare yourself to him.

When ordinary people start to take action based on what they feel is moral according to their God, innocent people get hurt. Research the Salem Witch Trials, The Spanish Inquisition, and the Crusades for more information about how religious zealousness occasionally clouds moral judgement.

When presented with a situation like the one you described, you have free will to decide how to act, just as the rapist did. If you feel that it's right to prevent the rape and "burn" the rapist in your basement, then do so - but don't cop out by saying "God made me do it" or "God would want it this way." Be prepared for the consequences of your actions, and be prepared to live with choices you make.

"What if I work in mysterious ways that are beyond your limited moral comprehension?"

According to the Bible, our understanding of what is good or evil is the same as God's.

And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Genesis 3:22

"What if I don't prevent the rape because I don't want to interfere with the rapist's free will?"

Isn't not helping interfering with the victim's free will?

"Why is it wrong for me to not prevent a rape if I can, and burn the rapist in my basement later, but when God does it, it's the pinnacle of morality?"

I've always believed that if you have the ability to help someone in need, you are morally obligated to do so.

There are only 2 reasons why an all powerful master of the universe would not help someone in need...

    1. He does not have the ability/power to help.

    2. He chooses not to help.

I'm sure I'll get a lot of thumbs down but what I said is the truth. You see I refuse to interpret the Bible how I see fit so it conforms to what I want to believe. Thumbs down if you agree.

A vengeful God who actually punishes transgressions as they occur? Well, we haven't had one of those since the Old Testament.

    I guess he's retired now.

Anyway, including the concept of morality in a question about an Abrahamic deity is a bit of a reach.

Why would God burn rapists? Rape is actually advocated in the old testament (just ask Lot...)

    Esther 4

13Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.

14For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
