Are the whites of the eyes harder than the colored parts of the eyes?

The whites of the eyes are called "sclera", from a Greek word for "hard". Why is that? Are the whites of the eyes harder than the colored parts of the eyes? Or... do they become that way after you die and someone is dissecting your corpse?

    The whites of the eyes - sclera - are fibrous and protective and hard.
