I recently used the X26 and can recommend it- but it does get very busy. The bus starts from West Croydon bus depot, and takes you to Heathrow Bus terminal. It takes over an hour and a half.
The other fast route is a taxi, but that can take from £40 to £60 if you pre-book.
I have never made it from home to Heathrow in under an hour, unless it was very , very early and there was no traffic. I south of Croydon.

If you can change your flight to arrive at Gatwick it's only 15 minutes on Southern trains to East Croydon.
From Heathrow it depends how much luggage you have and how long you want to take. If you don't have much luggage and have plenty of time you can take the Piccadilly Line from Heathrow to Green Park then change for the Victoria Line to Victoria. This can take between 40 to 60 minutes. You then take the Southern train from Victoria to either West or East Croydon which takes around 20 - 30 minutes. Price depends on whether you buy a single ticket or use Oyster.

If you have a lot of luggage you might want to take the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington then take the Bakerloo Line to Oxford Circus and change for the Victoria Line as before. This option costs around £28.
