Jesus was, is, and is to come. What does this mean?
I understand that Jesus is coming. But what about the first 2 parts? He "was"? He was what? And He "is"? He is what? These first two must be related with the last part, "is to come". What does it mean?

Jesus is the visible manifestation of the invisible God. God is infinite (not bound by time or any thing finite) therefore (was, is, is to come) past, present, and future all at the same time. If you read with the understanding that Jesus is God, it will help to overcome the fallacies associated with trying to break down his Divine/Human role. John 1:1 explains it well. God had a thought (was) vs.1, that thought became flesh (is) vs 14, Jesus will return (is to come). Your confusion can be mitigated in II Cor. 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself...

Under a different name. But, first, He comes within. He doesn't come until people say, blessed be he who comes in the name of the Lord, and only then, with myriads of people that have already "passed over." Ask the watchman if they see Him coming. They might know. There will be an alarm set before He comes at the 'Midnight hour.' "He approaches!" -In the 10 Virgins Parable. They will be dreaming dreams and seeing visions. People will say, "Lo here." or Lo there." No, don't go there, People will see as the "lightning flashes from the east to the west." Everyone will see. (Lightning is electricity, so could it be with electricity through wires?)

Trevor, the bible says that Jesus as the Son of God was at the beginning for he was involved in all of creation, nothing being created without him--so he was at the beginning. He is also during the Old Testament and then as the begotten son of God in the flesh Jesus--who died upon the cross carrying the sins of all mankind---now offering his sacrifice to be paid in our stead---giving each believer everlasting life. That is the "is" for he ascended to heaven and sits on the right hand side of God the Father.
"Is to come" is the basic story of Revelation--to his disciples he promised to return and by all indications of the phrophesy of Revelation it appears we are in the very end times meaning he will come soon. No one knows and will not know until it happens--that too is promised in the bible--so all those guessing will be wrong from proof but may luck out on a date.

Was/ His being was before He was visible on earth, And the statement is , "which is, which was and which is to come!" He is (now exists), He was, (has always existed) which is to come ( from one place to another) meaning He is now in heaven He will again come to earth. This is from Revelation, you should read the whole book of Revelation to get an understanding.

Trevor your question of Rev. 1:8
I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, which is, and which was, and which is to come,
is found in Rev. 1:17-18
fear not, I am the first and the last, I am he that liveth, and was dead, and behold I am alive forever more Amen and have the keys of hell and of death.
which is = I am he that liveth
which was = and was dead
which is to come = and behold I am alive forever more
and have the keys of hell and of death.

In the Bible in the book of Hebrews 13v8:"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow" Means the Triune God, including Jesus never changes. In Matthew 24:35:" Heaven and earth will pass away but my words never will pass away." So Jesus here is saying, the word of God as written in the Bible, is more significant than heaven and earth, He is the Creator of Heaven and Earth. In the Book of Genesis1v1, it says "In the beginning God (consists of God the Father, God the Son (Jesus and God the Holy Spirit) created the Heavens and the Earth." Genesis 1v26: in the Creation story, always says :"Let us make" The Us here is not God only. Jesus is involved and the Holy Spirit too. In Genesis 3v15:"And I (GOD the Father) will put enmity Between You and the Woman. And Between Your Seed (Evil Doers/Mankind/Demons) and Her Seed (JESUS CHRIST/Believers/Holy Angels) HE (JESUS) shall bruise you on the head (Fatal blow Jesus is going to give to Satan/Serpent via the Cross) And You (SATAN?DEVIL) bruise HIM (JESUS) on the HEEL (skin wound) by Jesus Suffering and persecution and death and rising from the Dead, Conquering Satan through His Finished Work on the Cross and saving Mankind and reconciling them back to God, only for those that accept the work that he did on the Cross. In John 8:48-59:"V52:"The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon!Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, "If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death." Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died?" V56:"Your Father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad." V57:"So the Jews said to him,"You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?" V58:"Jesus said to them,"Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM (I AM is another name for God/JESUS)" So he was there from Creation (WAS). He is to come as in the Book of 1Cor15:v51ff:"Behold, I shew you a mystery; We (Christians) shall not all sleep, (die) but we shall all be changed.V52:"In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead (Literally) shall be raised incorruptible (not the evil dead) and we shall be changed." So This is the Rapture. Or Second Coming of Jesus. Jesus first came as a Baby in Bethlehem through the Virgin Mary. 2Peter 3:v4:"And saying, Where is the promise of His Coming (Jesus) for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation." V10."But the day of the Lord (JESUS return for the unsaved world) will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away and with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. " The Book of Revelation gives a good Description of IS TO COME in Chapters 1 to 3 where Jesus Speaks to the Seven Churches. The Jews are not included here, because they would be Saved in the Great Tribulation in the reign of the Anti-Christ. Then they would be the only ones to whom Salvation thru Jesus Christ will be extended to.
