Anxiety can turn into OCD, mood disorders, personality disorders, even schizophrenia. All of those diagnosis is really just invented names for all the strange things that can happen with a mind if there's a lot of fear in it.

I can understand that the breathing obsession is scary. Personally I have real problems breathing sometimes when I sleep, so I know how it is like to feel short of breath.

If you want something that you can use to turn your obsession into something useful, I suggest meditation. The most common form for meditation is to actually observe your breath. You breath in the nose and out the mouth, while your seated comfortably with your eyes closed. Just breath and let your mind flow and perhaps after a while you will feel more relaxed and you won't obsess about not breathing anymore, but just enjoying to breath and nothing else.

Zoloft might help you, some antidepressants are said to have an effect on OCD. It's not something scary.

    Good luck.
