You might want to consider using a natural Red Oak hardwood for your flooring. To get the high gloss finish, the installer here used a pore filler on the top coat.

You might also consider a rustic board floor painted white, or one of the various grey tones being used. There are even realistic wood look tiles which have become available, used for walls and for floors.

laminate is always in and very durable. it's not really wood but gives you the look and if you should desire to change your mind, you can do so very easily. Cleans easily and comes in many different shades.
