what do you call the subject of an examination?

I'm looking for the right word... in this case the subject is an item that is chosen for examination, and not a person. "Item being examined" and "Item being inspected" are both too clumsy.

First thoughts that come to mind:

    Examination subject

    Examination item

    Subject

    Item

I guess it depends on the context and/or to what extent the surrounding text provides additional meaning. For example, if the context already makes it clear that you are referring to an examination, then just "subject" or "item" would seem to suffice.

I'll add more if I think of any :-)
