Is mentir special when it comes to preterite?

I know that in the present tense, it's: El miente and Ellos mienten, but for preterite why is it El mintio and Ellos mintieron, instead of El mientio and Ellos mientieron?????

    It's almost a rule:

    1.-Sentir- Sentí/sintió/sintió/sintieron/sentísteis/sintieron

    Mentir-Mentí/mintiió/...

    Pedir- Pedí/pidió/...

    Medir- Medí/midió...

    Requerir- Requerí/requirió/

    Adquirir- Adquirí/adquirió/...

    but sometimes, something strange happens:

    2.-Decir- Dije/dijo...

    Maldecir- Maldije/maldijo/...

    Bendecir- Bendije/bendijo...

    Predecir- Predije/predijo...

It's quite simple_ if the verb finished in "decir": it´s conjugated as "decir", otherwise as "mentir". These are called "paradigmas de verbos irregulares" (model verbs). If you know how to conjugate "mentir" and "decir", well you can conjugate them all...

It's one of those special verbs we all have to memorize that have stem changes. It's like preferir; prefirió. Oooooooooo and remember:***-IR verbs that have an irregular stem change in the present are the only ones to change into the preterite with an irregular stem. NO -ER OR -AR verbs.
