Accidently Hit A Parked Car and Didn't Realize it Until Later?

Hello,

Earlier today I was at Walmart and Safeway for Black Friday. I noticed when I got home that there's a scratch on my car. I am thinking that I hit another car backing out, because in the Wal-Mart parking lot, there were tons of people and kids screaming and yelling outside. It was also pitch black outside. I don't want to be one of those people that hits a car and doesn't leave a note/report it, because I wouldn't want that to happen to me. I tried calling Wal-Mart, and nobody answered the phone-I guess I expected this because it's black friday. I know this sounds silly, but I called the non-emergency police line to report the incident and provide any information. I am very stressed that I have caused damage to someone else's vehicle, even though I'm not sure if there even was damaged that occurred. Is there anything else I can do? Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Update:

@been there, done that: I didn't notice the scratch until I was at home, in my parking garage, and the scratch was blatantly obvious-You can see it from a solid 10 feet away. And I know that I don't know if I hit someone else's car or a cart hit mine, like I said, It's black Friday and there was a mad rush of people running everywhere, so I could have easily made a mistake/someone could have hit me. I just want to make sure that I do the right thing, because I wouldn't want someone to hit my car and not tell me/I wouldn't want to get in trouble. You never know who's watching-You could easily bump someone's car and a witness could take down your license plate number, etc. Bottom line-I'd rather be safe, responsible, and honest than sorry!

If it was pitch black how did you see a scratch?

How was it that you even were LOOKING for a scratch?

How could you hit something and not know??

Your story sounds fishy to me.

If you were backing out and bumped into something, don't you think you would have noticed it? Are you sure the mark wasn't already on your car from another vehicle, or even a cart that ran into it? You could anonymously call the police department and ask what you would do in this case, if you did accidentally scratch another car and did not realize it. Then, you would have the real scoop on it. If it is that dark in the parking lot, you ought to be really careful and especially if you are saying people were walking around.

If you do not know if you made contact with another vehicle while backing out, It would not make sense to inform anyone that you do not know if you did an action that caused damage or not, or, if you even came in contact with anything. You don't know if someone may have marked a scratch on your car with their car unless your car was constantly supervised. You said it was very dark. It is possible that someone else may have done what you thought you may or may not have done just the same, except they made contact with your car.

Sounds to me like you are just going to have to let this one go because there is nothing anyone can do about it anyway. Hey, all we can do is be as careful as possible. Nobody is going to expect more than that.

Theres a good possibility that someone hit you when they pulled out or in and took off. Of it could have been a shopping cart too. Don't worry, It was an accident, and you didn't even know it was down until you were home.

I don't understand how you could hit another car and not know it.

It was this so-called "Black Friday". This sort of thing seems to be mandatory.
