How do I change a codec so that I can view my videos?

I recently uploaded some videos to my computer from my phone (Model:Barcelona) However when I click on them a message appears saying: "Windows media cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec used to compress the file."

The web help isn't helpful at all but I know that the file type is supported. So how can I change the codec so that my videos and viewable??

    you install it

then you hope whatever software you use editor/player automatically employs it

    note:

you may need to choose it if you want to Render using that specific codec.

    further notes:

a file named say .AVI can contain many types of data so we call it Overloaded.

MP4 can also be Overloaded as can MOV, so i suspect you THINK you have a certain FORMAT but all that really means is you a file with a certain extension.

Its actual contents may require a speciailised codec.

    example

my compact digital camera takes MP4 movies and stores them in .MOV files. This actually contains a DivX MP4 data requiring a DivX codec(now also available with QuickTime which plays MOV files). You probably cannot rename the file MP4 cos it's a MOV format file.
