The 70s rock band Spirit; anybody know them?

A non-mainstream group; the lead guitarist called himself Randy California. His guitar style is similar to Carlos Santana. I had their LP "The Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus". Environmental themes in songs like 'Fresh Garbage' and 'Nature's Way', way ahead of our times. Their best known hit was 'I Got a Line On You, Babe', still a real pop rocker. Great forgotten album. Any comments?

Right! Spirit- Sardonicus! They're a kind of missing link band. Randy learned guitar licks from Hendrix, and then inspired Jimmy Page....

Sardonicus, such a great album, the twelve songs, each one is a dream. The album starts and ends with the same refrain, the same words, creating a kind of infinite loop. It's not seventies, but sixties. I don't know if it's quite as accomplished as Easter Everywhere or Forever Changes, but then again maybe it is. Kind of a mysterious album, I passed a spare copy to a friend of mine, and I don't recall if I ever saw him afterwards... I hope it took him with it on his trip, wherever he has gone!

I like Animal Zoo, Mister Skin...all of it really! I'll have to dig it out of the data stack!

Edit: Good call Billy R. It's from 1970, and Spirit did more after that... but their first three albums were sixties, and in my opinion, Sardonicus too is rooted in that era... Eh well :)

Ededit: Aah! Can't find it on my hard drive! Looks like the copy I gave my mate was the only one! Weilaway!

Twelve Dreams was actually released in 1970 and hit #63 on Billboard's chart in Feb. 1971. It was certified Gold in 1976, and yes, it's a classic. I also enjoyed the offshoot band, Jo Jo Gunne, formed by former Spirit members Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes.

They have been a favorite of mind since they first came out. And I do own all of their works on vinyl. He also played in Jimi Hendrix's pre-Experience group The Blue Flames. It was Hendrix who named him Randy 'California.'
