Is it wrong to just stay home for Christmas?
Im a student and just finished a 5 week practicum. I have two children and I would just like to relax and unwind and enjoy the holidays with my girls. My parents expect me to be at their house Christmas eve and stay until boxing day. I would have no problem with this if we lived far away and didn't see each other often. However, my parents live 10 minutes away and we see them often. I would even hold Christmas dinner at my house if they would like. I just don't want to deal with a bunch of drama. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but I would like to stay home and relax. Is that wrong?

Merry Christmas, Mimi!
It most assuredly is not wrong to desire to stay home with your children for Christmas. You don't owe your family, nor anyone, for that matter, your presence at their house if you prefer instead to remain in your own home. You have that right. However, some feathers, especially when it comes to tradition-bound family encounters, are bound to get ruffled when you opt to change course after "toeing the line" for so long. Perhaps it's time for your family to realize that change is a part of life, that no insult was intended because you chose to stay at home. After all, the best held memories of Christmas are those that are captured in front of a gaily bedecked tree with a cordials glass full of rum eggnog--within the warmth of your own home.
