Same-sex marriage is legally recognized in some jurisdictions within the United States and by the federal government. As of December 2013, eighteen states, (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Washington), as well as the District of Columbia, have legalized same-sex marriage, although the Illinois law will not become effective until June 1, 2014. Eight Native American tribal jurisdictions] issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples. Oregon recognizes same-sex marriages performed in other states. A Federal court in Utah declared the state's ban on same-sex marriage in Utah unconstitutional, but an appeal is expected.

I find it a bit odd that for whatever reasons, same gender marriages can be against the law, yet some states, some religions allow polygamy.

I'm a gay female, with a gay life mate, don't need a paper contract or publicly professed vows to be committed to my partner.

I'm a Minister living in Utah, and an elected official. Yes, this did pass in Utah.

I am against homosexuality, but I believe al people have the right to do whatever pleases them as far as they do not infringe on anyone else.

While I disapprove of homosexuality, I approve that all people reserve the right to self-determination.

All people reserve their right to have whatever relationship they please and with whom, if all are freely consenting adults.

I get so frustrated over gay marriage because marriage and other things shouldn't be decided by anyone but the two adults. The people who feel they have a right to tell others who they can love and marry are just plain wrong and need to keep their ways to themselves.

I am a woman married to a man and if two men or two women want to be married I say congratulations, not you bad people.

When will the human race ever be able to just be about caring and respect?

I hope there are more people like me than people who want to control others.

Source(s): I know what is right and wrong. Telling another person who to love is wrong. Humans have no right to play GOD!

One the one hand I'm shocked, on the other I'm not because the legal ban was clearly unconstitutional. I guess I'm surprised when US judges don't dither over clear rulings (see SCOUTS) because of politics.

it's ironic in a state that had to conform to the US government's ideal of marriage to become a state to now dictate another form of marriage.

Well it happened a lot sooner than I expected, but I think it's great.

Very surprised! But I'm definitely glad that it's happening.
