Is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" the best Rock and Roll guitar song ever?
This may be pure heresy but I prefer Prince's version to Clapton's. What do you think?
And what song do you think is the best Rock guitar song ever?
I assumed that anyone answering this question would surely be aware that I knew that George Harrison wrote the song and because he felt that he didn't have the guitar talent to entirely do it justice he asked Eric Clapton to sit in and play the lead on the original recording. But I guess I was wrong.
I hope that those who are disparaging my choice of Prince's version over Clapton's have actually listened to Prince's performance of the song when he was asked to perform it at George Harrison's induction to the R R Hall of Fame. I never thought someone could play the song better than Clapton but Prince absolutely shredded it. For another unusual and very well done version of the song, check out the collaboration done by Carlos Santana and the world famous cellist YoYo Ma.
Incidentally, the first Rock concert I ever attended was the famous October 1969 Cream farewell concert at the Inglewood Forum, and I have never seen Prince in concert or even been a real fan of his. So it is obvious that I would have a certain bias toward Clapton in matters of the guitar, yet I still believe that in this instance Prince played the better version of this classic song.
Oops, the year was 1968.

The song is great, but I don't think it is the best ever.
My top picks for best guitar songs are:
Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of "Little Wing"
Dick Dale's "Miserlou" (for doing it all on one string)
Frank Zappa's "Watermellon In Easter Hay"
Cream's "White Room"
Derrick & the Domino's "Layla"
Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here"

I love this song and although I don't think it is the best R&R song ever, I would certainly never tire of listening to it. I really don't think I could nail down just one best song ever so that part would be hard for me to answer.
I would much rather hear the Harrison/Clapton arrangement of it over Prince any day but then again I personally think that Clapton could fart the song better than Prince.
There is another arrangement of it from a concert that Clapton and friends did to honor Harrison after he died and Clapton not only plays guitar on it but also sings. That is my favorite arrangement.

Arguably, it is. I would not be one to argue with you about it.
It is an iconic, legendary guitar rock song. It's my favorite Beatles song (you do realize it is a George Harrison song, not a Clapton song [though Clapton played on the original studio recording]), right?

When Clapton played with Harrison on occasion that when 'the real 'weeps' would take place.
Comfortably Numb- David Gilmore/Pink Floyd

I like the Beatle's version.
But as far as "best rock guitar song ever", I'd go with Johnny B. Goode.
The reason is that its not limited to a particular band (like Stairway is) or a particular sub-genre. Any rock, country, punk, hip-hop, folk group can play Johnny B. Goode and sound good and sub-genre constant.
Put it another way, if you were to walk up to a random band and insist that they add a song to their set. If you were to do that, much of the time they wouldn't know your song, or it would screw up their set or it would fit weird with their sound. But to maximize the number of bands who knew the song, that would fit their set, that would add to their set, you would choose Johnny B. Goode as your demand song.
Johnny B. Goode is the best rock guitar song.

Eric Clapton did a superb job sitting in for George Harrison on that tune, I think it ranks right up there.
"Scatterbrain" - Jeff Beck
"SWLABR" - Cream (Clapton)
