Where did Christianity get the idea for the "Holy Ghost"?

Who was the Holy Ghost before he died and became a ghost? It wasn't Jesus. When did the Catholic first invent the Holy Ghost? Why?

    John 14

    Jesus Promises Another Helper

15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

14:16 ask the Father. The priestly and intercessory work of Christ began with the request that the Father send the Holy Spirit to indwell in the people of faith (7:39; 15:26; 16:7; see note on 20:22; cf. Ac 1:8; 2:4, 33).

another. The Gr. word specifically means another of the same kind, i.e., someone like Jesus Himself who will take His place and do His work. The Spirit of Christ is the Third Person of the Trinity, having the same essence of deity as Jesus and as perfectly one with Him as He is with the Father.

Helper. The Gr. term here lit. means “one called alongside to help” and has the idea of someone who encourages and exhorts (see note on 16:7). “Be with you” has to do with His permanent residence in believers (Ro 8:9; 1Co 6:19, 20; 12:13).

14:17 Spirit of truth. He is the Spirit of truth in that He is the source of truth and communicates the truth to His own (v. 26; 16:12–15). Apart from Him, people cannot know God’s truth (1Co 2:12–16; 1Jn 2:20, 27).

abides with you and will be in you. This indicates some distinction between the ministry of the Holy Spirit to believers before and after Pentecost. While clearly the Holy Spirit has been with all who have ever believed throughout redemptive history as the source of truth, faith, and life, Jesus is saying something new is coming in His ministry. John 7:37–39 indicates this unique ministry would be like “rivers of living water.” Acts 19:1–7 introduces some Old Covenant believers who had not received the Holy Spirit in this unique fullness and intimacy. Cf. Ac 1:8; 2:1–4; 1Co 12:11–13.

Well Judy; you are treading on thin ice when you ask questions

about the Holy Ghost, if you haven't fallen through already.

The Holy Ghost/ Holy Spirit is not an "it". He is a "He"; The

third part of the Godhead. He did not originate from Christianity.

He is first mentioned in Genesis 1:2, "And the Spirit of God

moved upon the face of the waters." There are many other references to him from that time on.

In 1Samuel 16:14, says, "But the Spirit of the Lord departed

from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him."

In Psalms, King David asked the Lord.to, "Take not thy

    Holy Spirit from me."

After the resurrection of Christ, the Holy Ghost was sent to

dwell with all Christians on a permanent basis.

No one can grasp the Holy Spirit 'The man who denies the Trinity will lose his soul. The man who tries to understand the Trinity will lose his mind.” We are finite and maybe in a different time or space we will understand the infinite.

The Holy Spirit came to glorify Christ. On the eve of His crucifixion during the last supper Jesus said to the disciples, "The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said. John 14:26.

There was only one church in the early third century when the doctrine of the Holy Spirit began to be developed. The divinity of the Holy Spirit was formalized in 381 at the council of Constantinople.

To be Christian is to accept a triune Godhead.

The link below will give you everything you need to know about the Trinity.

Actually it was from Jesus and the Catholic Church merely affirmed what Jesus had said. Which is why the Apostles creed was recited by those about to receive the sacrament of Holy Baptism since before 100 A.D. Which is when God the Holy Spirit inspired St. John to write Revelation. In case you think this was of a later date as some have falsely believed. The early councils of the Church were not about forming new doctrines as the later ones seem to be. They were about affirming the faith once delivered unto the saints as passed down from Jesus to His apostles.

They didn't. The holy ghost is a gift from God himself. He gives it to his elect that he has chosen. It is a gift from God. The Trinity is God the Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost. Mankind has nothing to do with the Holy Ghost.

Where did Christians get there God from?It started whit the Old Testament and the one and only Jewish God.That God,after Adam and Eve sinned sentenced the human animal to death. Then that same God had a Son,himself, and send his Son,himself,on a suicide mission to give the human animal a second chance for life after dead.So we have the Old Jewish God and the Son of the Old Jewish God,himself.Where did the Christian God come from.I do not remember Jesus ever going to a Christian house of worship.Did the old God,the Creator God,change to a different religion and forgot about his chosen people?

God is triune and consists of God the Father, Jesus and God the Holy Spirit, who is also known as the Holy Ghost.

    John 16:6-8

6"But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7"But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8"And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;…

    Acts 2:

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[b] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

Jesus Himself spoke of the Comforter and later His followers and those who trust in Him were given the presence of the Holy Spirit - the Comforter in their hearts. His job is to reveal and confirm God's truth.

He was not invented. He was there the whole time -at the creation and later inspiring scripture writers to dictate God's love letter to the world- waiting for the Father's cue to take His promised place in the heart of every believer.

You may have met Him yourself. Among other things- He's the one who gently convicts us when we are wrong and invites us to be gracious and kind to others who can do nothing for us in return.

He is God's living and loving presence in my heart:)
