Do these rotors need changing?
Is it time for new pads/rotors up front?
I just rotated my tires and checked my front disc brakes at the time (last changed 3.5 yrs ago by a mechanic) . The pads are all >1/8 inch, but the rotors' surfaces look awful. The surfaces are rust colored, chip away easily with my fingernail or a blunt plastic tool, and look generally corroded. There are areas where it looks like the rust/debris chipped away and the surface is uneven by about 1-2/16ths of an inch. I took no pics at the time. They do not resemble my rear disc brake surfaces in terms of smoothness or rust/corrosion. The rear pads and rotors were replaced 3 months ago.
I'm trying to save money on labor with some simpler auto work and am generally handy with this sort of thing, but I lack the experience of looking at brakes rotors.
Symptomatically, I'm getting no rumbling, grinding, or pulling when I brake, but the time it takes to decelerate seems longer than usual regardless of wetness.
Thank you all.

As long as a vehicle will stop safely, I like the rotors to be something other than smooth as from the factory. Wobble and bumps on the rotor are the only thing that makes the brakes release and not drag causing a decrease in gas mileage and premature failure of the brake pads. With rust and flaking, it sounds like the front brakes are not engaging at all.

If you think you need new brakes, you might as well go ahead and replace them and the rotors. If you run it with low pads itll put grooves in the rotors and everything will be just a big pile of **** so you might as well do them both at once instead of doing one then having to redo it to do something else.

Yes regardless of sound if your rotors r uneven its best to change them. An inexpensive way to change them would be to go to a wrecking yard and find some off the exact same vehicle and plus its cheaper then autozone

Sounds like you change those, especially if they are chipping away. They're not supposed to do that. Sounds like you ran the brak pads down too low and it ruined the roters. I know because it happened to me once.

I suspect that your front brakes are not working AT ALL. Anything you can flick off with a thumbnail should have been taken off long ago by the pads. suspect you are up for pads & calipers as well.
