Why is my garbage disposal loud when it is shutting down?

My garbage disposal is still turning off and on and still grinds food. It seems to run the same as usual when on. However, it is suddenly making a very very loud sound while shutting down. (There may be some shake to it also.) Does it actively apply breaks? is there something I can do?

Good suggestions both, but at least first get a flashlight and take a look down in there, looking for hard debris like what's left of a cheap spoon, a make-up brush somebody was washing out (a good thing to do), etc. Amazing how much racket the junk can make! Happy holidays.

Sounds like, to me, that a bearing is going out. Unless you know how to tear it down and replace bearings, no. I would check into how much a new one costs. Then check with a plumber.

I think Kenneth is right, either bad bearings or the blade is out of ballance. I have never owned one so I don't know if they can be repaired, parts replaced or if you replace the entire unit.
