Would homemade explosive arrows be considered illegal?

A friend of mine claims he knows how to make explosive tips for his bow. He has the chemicals, since his parents are chemical engineers. (not that they would know he would make them).

If unlicensed...

My question is: Would they be considered illegal? My guess is most definitely.

And what level of threat would they be considered? In terms of fines, possible jail sentence, requirements to yield such a weapon. etc.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. Manufacturing explosives is very illegal. Doubly so for minors.

Your friend is BSing you. Chemical Engineers typically do not work with chemicals in their home (as their jobs generally deal with industrial manufacturing and production) and rarely have jobs that work with chemicals that could be used to make explosives.

In this time of low tolerance for any minors that cross the line regarding anything could be used as a weapon, it could mean:

    1. Being expelled from school and require special schooling (unless you are in jail).

    2. Time in juvie.

    3. A weapons felony on your record which would end prevent you from getting into the college that you want, voting, or buying or possessing a gun.

    4. A terrorism charge (they may use your friend as an example to scare anyone from doing something stupid).

    5. Time in big boy prison.

There are many common household chemicals that, if combined, could be explosives. Conducting such experiments could earn a person a visit from the BATFE, which can be a VERY BAD THING. See the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas as an example.

    Well, let's see.

First off, your friend is a LIAR. His parents are chemical engineers, right? Well they'd be utterly stupid chemical engineers if they had the components for explosives in their home. Not only because of the questionable legality, but because most of the components used in explosives are very toxic or very unstable, or both. In other words, they could die multiple ways- an explosion, toxic fumes, from bullets when SWAT arrives once they read your question and figure out who your "friend" is...

Second, it is highly illegal to manufacture explosives without the proper licensing. The jail sentence could be ten years for ONE offense, with fines as high as $250,000. If there were other offenses, such as allowing their idiot son access to those chemicals (i.e. child endangerment, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, child abuse by neglect, etc.) they could spend 20+ years in jail.

As for your "friend," he isn't a friend. Stay away from idiots who tell lies.

Ok if you live in Canada it would be cookie cutter 25 years for violating the Criminal Code of the Crown Bench and Firearms act... If you are lucky you can be out in. Five years good if you behave well... In the United States not so much, with laws and politics the way they are now if you are lucky you may be out in 15 years with good legal rep... OR you may be held on a terror ticket because you are stupid that is if you are not shot on sight for doing it... The ATF will not goof around when it comes to that stuff and they will do everything then can to know that they are going to be going home at the end of the day.

I would slap your "Friend" really hard and stop talking to him.

Illegal explosives are handled by the ATF. They have little to no sense of humor on the subject. You're looking at a prison term of up to 10 years. Per offense.

Don't get me wrong, things that go boom are fun. But believe it or not, there are legal ways to do stuff like this. It's harder, and takes more time and a LOT more money, as well as having people with proper licensure who really do know what they're doing with energetic compounds, but well worth it in the long run.

Your "friend's" shortcut is going to get him, and you, in trouble. Seriously. You don't want to screw up your life this early and prevent yourself from getting to play with explosives professionally later on. It's a blast. Literally.

You want to learn about explosives? Get a copy of The Blaster's Handbook:

    http://www.amazon.com/The-Blasters-Handbook-Du-Pon...

It's VERY dry reading. But very detailed and mathematics oriented.

That's right. Demolitions guys have to be EXPERTS in mathematics, because lives depend on their equations.

At your age now, you cannot get licensed. But you CAN learn all you can about the subject so that when it's TIME to get licensed, you can be one of "those guys" the others all hate because you sit down without studying or cramming (because you already know pretty much everything as easily as breathing), take the test faster than anyone else, ace it, and then get assigned to one of the best FTO's because of your potential, to teach you ALL the cool tricks, so that you get to play with the best toys for the rest of your life.

Now is the time to learn. As you get older, if you're the best, you'll be busy as hell DOING and you won't have as much time to learn the nuances of the trade. Right now, your learning is a compressed snapshot of "all you need to know" about what may be your chosen profession. The knowledge will change over time, but the difference is, you will be MAKING history and EXPERIENCING knowledge, as opposed to just learning it.

But you have to learn it "up to now" first. And NOT by screwing your life up with cheezy amateur "experiments" when you're young. Do it right and you can be doing stuff with explosives for all of your career while idiots and liars go on to destroy their lives. Which is sad because it's fun to be young and stupid, but it's even MORE fun to be older, sitting in a nice house with money in the bank while all the jerks who tried to get you jammed up with the law are sitting in jail or barely making a living making french fries somewhere.

All because you learned early and well, and then did it right, and did it better than anyone else.

THEN you may get opportunities to REALLY experiment with explosives, making all this kid stuff look like a sad little joke.

    Probably.

Probably......But I guess where you live might make a little difference
