If you are already trying to do your 2013 tax return, you might as well stop right now. You HAVE to have your W-2 in hand. You can't do the return without it. And it won't be accepted by IRS before 1/31/14 anyway.

The W-2 shows your GROSS wages in box 1 and the Federal income tax in box 2. It will not show net pay because that is irrelevant.

Do you all ready have your W-2 forms in your hand for the 2013 tax year so that you can correctly fill out your 1040 FIT return during this 2014 tax filing season that will NOT begin until January 31 2014 when the IRS is supposed to start accepting the efiled online returns for processing for the 2013 tax year 1040 RETURNS.

W-2 form Box 1 $$$$ Gross wages for the 2013 tax year at that time in life to be enter on the correct line of the 1040 FIT return that you are using for the 2013 tax year.

Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful. 01/02/2014

Probably neither. You would use the entry from the box on your W-2. Net pay is what was on the check, after all deductions. Gross pay is all the pay. The difference is the deductions, some of which, like Medicare and Social Security, are included in taxable income, but others, like 401k and maybe health insurance, are not.

If your asking this that means you don't have you're w2 yet. What your Doing is illegal, and pointless since irs won't except returns until January 31. And going by All the impatient Ppl I know, if you file before then and you get a refund you won't get it until April.
