when I was younger me and like 5 others pulled an engine by chaining it and sliding a long heavy pole / pipe through the chain and we all lifted it up at once... the thing weighed a ton!!! it was an older Chevy 283 from a 65 Nova. lol I don't recommend it. But if you have a "Come along" some chain and a really big, strong tree branch, you could attach the come along to the branch with the car under it and use that... or if the car is in the garage and you trust the beams in the garages roof structure, you can use those to attach a come along too.

First off the 400s are junk youll be better off with the 350 youll get more bang for your buck and itll take alot more abuse. If you want to replace the cam you need to also replace the cam bearings which can all be done in the car but not very easily. Roller rockers DO NOT offer any true advantage over spring lifters id go with a better quality spring before the rollers. Comp cams will probably be the best brand to go with considering youre not going to race it professionally, Just make sure you get the right lift/duration for your application. Remember its not just the cam and lifters thats gonna give you a good powerhouse engine, it is the combo of the cam lifters intake and carb all together. If you really want good horsepower have the heads ported and polished and add flat top pistons as well.

The fact that you're even considering disassembling your engine piece by piece to get it out of the car rather than renting or buying an engine crane indicates you have no business touching the car.

You can raise it with a set of pulleys suspended from the garage rafters. Remember to scratch a line around the hood washers so you can realign the hood when you put it back on. Engine cranes are not too expensive new so you could probably buy a used one and resell it when you are done.

You don't have a prayer of slugging the engine block out of the engine bay. Rent a triangular hydraulic engine hoist from a rental center.

Look for a used one. They hoists / cranes are not that expensive anymore and often times people buy them for a project and don't use them again. They get tired of them taking up space and sell them. Most likely you can do the same thing and recover most of what you paid for it when you sell it.
