What were pedophiles called in the 1930's and '40's?
Working on a little period fiction and I was trying to sort out what pedophiles were called in the 1930's-1940's.
Everything I've looked up shows them referred to by the modern terms (Sexual Predators, Sexual Offenders, Pedophiles, etc) but nothing I've found shows what they were called by the average public.
Did the average American use the term "Pedophile"? Or did they call them something else? Something that the psychological journals are not mentioning in favor of the scientific and modern terms?
Bugger! That was the word I was looking for.
And as an FYI...the apostrophe while may not be commonly taught in schools today was taught when I was in school. It was the "correct" way of writing it back then.
Yes...that dates me a bit

The word pedophile has been around at least since 1886, when it was used in the book Psychopatia Sexualis.
EDIT- The term pederast refers to an age range. In modern times, the age is 12-17. It's also relationships between men and boys. It doesn't encompass girls.

That's because back then they were far more subtle and careful about what they did. If they were caught then justice was swift, brutal and usually meted out by a close male relative. If the pedophile lived to tell about it he didn't do it again. The same goes for gays. They existed back then but you never heard about it because it was dealt with brutally and swiftly and the law looked the other way.
