VLSM question for networking?
If the address 10.10.0.0/20 is subnetted by borrowing 3 bits, what is the address of the first
host in the last subnet?
How would you work this out and what answer did you get?
I'm struggling so much on this one question. Thanks
Hi thanks for your response but that wasn't a option for any answers i had :(
(a) 10.10.255.254
(b) 10.10.23.254
(c) 10.10.14.1
(d) 10.10.15.1
I can see where your coming from and tried your way but had no luck

I did this in my head so you might want to double check, but the first host in the last subnet should be 10.10.254.1. Basically you take 10.10.0.0/20, and add three bits to the mask, since you're "borrowing" the bits. This makes 10.10.0.0/23, which has a mask of 255.255.254.0. In a /23, each subnet then consists of 2 possible digits for your third octet (i.e. the first subnet is 0 and 1 for the third octet, or 10.10.0.0 to 10.10.1.255). The last possible pair of numbers for any octet would be 254 and 255, or in this case 10.10.254.0 and 10.10.255.0. As a result, your first possible usable IP address in the last possible subnet would be 10.10.254.1.
