Career that lets me protect animals?

What are some careers in which you're directly involved in animal care? My ideal job would be something that lets me rehabilitate or otherwise save animals that have been abused. But I'm also concerned that a job like that wouldn't make me much money, especially since until now I've been planning to go into the lucrative field of computer technology.

I'm squeamish, so being a vet seems out of the question since you'd need to perform (or at least watch during your training) surgeries. Is this something I'd need to get over in order to work directly with animals at all, or are there options for me that don't involve the gory stuff?

Obviously I'm going to do further research but I need a starting point.

Update:

Yeah... that's kind of what I figured, with the gore. It's something I'm willing to work on if it means being able to help but the low salary is definitely a deterrent. I don't want to be struggling but at the same time I don't want to be making six figures from a career I hate.
