Career that lets me protect animals?

Question

What are some careers in which you're directly involved in animal care? My ideal job would be something that lets me rehabilitate or otherwise save animals that have been abused. But I'm also concerned that a job like that wouldn't make me much money, especially since until now I've been planning to go into the lucrative field of computer technology.

I'm squeamish, so being a vet seems out of the question since you'd need to perform (or at least watch during your training) surgeries. Is this something I'd need to get over in order to work directly with animals at all, or are there options for me that don't involve the gory stuff?

Obviously I'm going to do further research but I need a starting point.

Honestly, there aren't very many.  People who do this are usually vets or rescue folks.  People who run rescues tend to do it on charity or they make a small salary - enough to survive.

I do have friends that run a doggie daycare and they commit part of their land to rescue.  One of them has a day job while the other runs "the ranch".

If you can't handle gory things, you can't handle abused animal rescue.  Abuse often comes with injuries, often gory injuries.
