You will have to haul it there and the cost of gasoline and your time might not be worth the effort.

When I replaced my old water heater I gave it to a guy who scavenges scrap metal as a little side business, he was happy to take the thing. Problem was it had an enormous amount of mineral deposits in it and was very heavy. Took me and a neighbor to help him get it into his pickup truck bed. I don't know how much he got for it but he's still friends with me !

Srap steel in my area is about 9 cents a pound. Not a lot of money if it's your only trip to the scrap metal place.

The brass on the machine would be worth a few cents. The steel isn't worth a whole lot. You would need to separate out the different metals on the heater and also remove the non-metals. Even then you would only get a few bucks. You could probably put an add on craigslist that you want to get rid of your water heater and a scrapper will pick it up for free.

If you got a new water heater, make sure you check with your energy company to see if they offer rebates.

Yes and they will only pay what the going rate of scrap metal is at the time. Here it's about ,10 cents/#, so depending on how big your water heater is and weighs multiply by about 10 cents. So not much maybe a few bucks.

A scrape dealer will accept a water heater, currently around 5 to 10 cents lb, but most have a minimum weight for scrap steel, often 500 lbs or more.

    Edit, now in 2016 it's paying 2 to 3 cents a pound.

You can sell it sure, but like its been said already they pay by the pound for scrap metal and prices vary. If I were you I would strip the copper out and gather up more of both scrap metal and copper and make one big trip. Thats about the only way to make it worthwhile.

Also as a side note you can gather up a pile of aluminum cans and turn them in as well. It takes a lot of cans to make any dollars but every little bit helps.

If your utility district has scrap pickup along with overprices garbage and greeen refuse collection, that could be the more "profitable" way to dispose of a metal/rust and glass water heater...after you figure in transportation and fuel costs. Or have the new unit installer, or a scrap collector, haul it away.

yes you can most metal reclaimers have rules about how to prep your materials , most likely you will need to remove the old insulation around the tank , also the more brass and copper you take off from it and seperate before hand you make more . basically the more you put effort into breaking it down and make less work for them the more you make. old electric motors have a alot of copper and last i checked was about 3.89USD per pound on scrap , you could call your scrapyard or go there i know mine has a booklet describing what they take and dont and how to prep the material , but worth the effort over just throwing away
