Best books/sources of information about general knowledge such as history, etc.?

I was not conventionally educated as a child and teen, and although I am in college, I feel as though I am missing a lot of basic knowledge regarding information such as history, government, and basic general knowledge. Clearly I can listen to lectures and read books, but I find that many are detailed and focus on one or two specific aspects- are there any books out there that briefly cover a wide spectrum of basic facts?

Thank you!

Also, I am currently reading A Short History of Nearly Everything- so I'm looking for other options.

There's a series called "Don't Know Much About..." Like, Don't Know Much About the Civil War, Don't Know Much About the Presidents, etc.

"The Idiot's Guide to Religion" is a great overview of all the world's religions, without trying to convert you to any of them.

Stephen Hawking's A Short History of Time is a great book about The Universe.

You might enjoy the TED Talks on YouTube. These are short and cover a variety of topics, from how to tie your shoes properly to Global Warming.

There's a series called The History Of The World. Your library probably has it.

Ask the librarian to help you locate general information like that, they would be your best source.
