Serious question about Christians?
Why are so many Christians taught that they must not ever read or see anything that isn't from a Christian perspective? I keep seeing questions "Can a Christians read this?" "Is it okay if a Christian sees this movie?"
If your faith is strong and true, you should not be in danger from experiencing a different point of view. And if you never talk to anyone outside you own church, how effective can you be in Witnessing your faith?
What I see makes me feel that you have been feed some dubious "facts" in the name of "Christianity" and the people who told you this bunk are afraid you'll find out the Truth. Jesus spent His time with sinners, after all.
Looking for some serious answers.

31 AnswersBooks & Authors6 years agoQuestion about sailing a wooden ship?
I'm writing a historical novel, and need help with a situation.
Years is 1717, man and woman, both experienced sailors, are on a boat (I'm thinking a large ketch, but could change my mind easily) They really need one more hand to get the mainsail raised, but have to make do, as they are in an emergency situation.
They don't have enough rope to rig anything clever, But I'm thinking they'll put some cleats on the deck for traction, and will be able to get the mainsail about 3/4 up.
After they're at sea, I need for some kind of "oh $hit" moment to happen. A quick, scary emergency to create a little excitement. I'd also love to know some things they could be arguing about.
Would some kind soul please vet my information and plan, and give me some idea? Thank you in advance.
4 AnswersBoats & Boating7 years agoHaving a problem with pictures on my Blogger?
Used to be that when I posted a new blog entry to Facebook, I would get a choice to use any of the pictures in the post as a thumbnail. Now my only choice is to use the 1 picture in my sidebar. Can I override this somehow? Any way to use different pictures?
( I tried Blogger Help, but all I found out is that other people have the same problem)

4 AnswersLanguages7 years agolooking for a painting?
I know I've seen this. It's an old fashioned painting of a woman with red hair. Her back is to the viewer, and she's taking a bath or in the water. Nude, or with just a small bit of cloth. I want to use a section of this in an art project and I can't remember where to find it or the title.

3 AnswersBooks & Authors8 years agoHelp with blogspot blog comments?
I have been posting for about 6ms. now, and have had a very respectable 7,000+ hits. But only 14 comments, and 1 follower. Some of my friends say they have wanted to leave comments, but they "Have to sign up for something" first, so they don't.
I want to make my blog as welcoming to comments as possible, and have gone to settings and done everything I can think of.
Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

1 AnswerGoogle8 years agoQuestion about English countryside, 1715?
I'm writing about an English navy captain, 1715. I've decided he has a widowed mother and an unmarriageable (slightly handicapped) older sister. He has bought them a cottage in the countryside to live in (since he is at sea so much) and has made the best arrangements he is able to make sure they are secure if he should be killed.
So, where should this cottage be located? I just need a name of a place I can toss out. And if someone can point me to a research site for his finances, or give me basic information on how he would set up a trust.
3 AnswersHistory8 years agoLooking for an old French term?
I had written a rape scene in my novel that takes place in the 18th century. Originally the rapist was English and used the term, "I'll squire you right here" meaning I'll have rowdy sex with you right here.
For various reasons I've changed his nationality to French. So now he needs to say something similar, old fashioned, that means roughly the same thing.
Any ideas? It should translate reasonably well into English.
1 AnswerLanguages8 years agoDo you like this blurb?
The year is 1717, and pirate Captain Scarlet MacGrath wants nothing more than a decent meal, a glass of rum and a good man waiting for her in the next port. But life rarely works out that neatly.
When the rum runs out, Scarlet sets sail for the mainland to look up an old friend. But friends turn into enemies pretty quick in this part of the world, and before long Scarlet, her crew, and the good ship Donnybrook are caught between the lawless Donnelly boys and the bloody-handed Red Ned Doyle himself. Can Scarlet use her Irish charms to free herself and her crew, or will it be cutlass and cannon?
Would you change it?

Does this seem like a good opening?
“Where’s the bloody payroll?”
Scarlet MacGrath strode from the ruin of the captain’s cabin, grabbed the schooner’s captain by the front of his shirt and dug the muzzle of her flintlock into the flesh of the man’s face, up under the cheekbone. The white of his eye rolled upward. They stood against each other for a long moment, and finally he said, steady enough, ”There ain’t no payroll, the men are in on shares.”
She backed off then, half a thoughtful step, leaving the print of her pistol barrel on his cheek, and asked a little more politely, “What are you meanin’ by that?”
“I own the boat. I suspected the merchant houses of cheating us, so it bein’ the off season, I told the boys that any man who came south with me would have a percentage. I was aimin’ to sell in Jamaica.”
She lowered the pistol and gave him a little more space. “Well, I have a great respect for a man what treats his crew fair. We’ll still rob you, mind, but I will apologize about your cabin.” Litter from her search was visible through the open door, clothing and books scattered, the desk overturned, the sea chest rifled, the bunk torn apart.
If you like it, the whole thing is FREE right now. Please leave me a review.
3 AnswersBooks & Authors8 years agoQuestion about Catholic penance?
If a Catholic man is involved in some non-legal freedom fighting, say IRA or some other illegal acticivty that he believes is for the greater good.
And if he sincerely regrets the people who are hurt or killed by his actions, but doesn't change his ways, because he believes he's doing long-range good work. And he goes to Mass and confession 2 or 3 times a year as he is able...
What's the Church's position on that? Heaven, hell or purgatory?
And if he's executed for his crimes, and not given a priest for last rites, does that affect anything? Can anyone besides a priest give last rites? Would anyone else know what to do?
Please. no snarky answers. I'm trying to understand the Catholic faith.

1 AnswerLanguages8 years agoWhat do you think of this paragraph?
It's the description of part of a pirate town.
The Black Dog tavern had once been a grand house, in the Spanish style, with two wings, two stories, and a tiled roof, its central courtyard open to the stars. But the English had captured and partially burned it, and no good had come to the place when the Spanish took it back, or when the French had bombarded it with cannon fire, or when the English claimed it yet again.
Now pirates ruled the island and repairs had finally begun. Palmetto thatch covered holes in the roof, and blackened beams mixed with mud and fresh timber supported the north wall. The north wing was gone forever, but the two-story central courtyard remained almost intact. A balcony ringed the space on three sides, allowing whores of both sexes, pirates and gentleman deep in their cups to look out over the noisy crowd below, laughing, calling to friends and trading gossip.
Tables and benches were rough-hewn timber, or else heavily carved Spanish antiques, and a few places on the wall held fine, moldy old paintings, slowly succumbing to the dampness and the heat. And after three years, when the wind blew from the north west, the place still smelt of rain, and gunpowder, and burning.

3 AnswersMythology & Folklore8 years agoAnyone like reading about Pirates?
I've written a historically-based pirates series, The Pirate Empire, and right now (for a limited time) the first book is free!
In real life, England got rid of her pirates by pardoning them, letting everyone off the hook for all their crimes. I wondered what would have happened if they had decided to fight instead. The Pirate Empire is the story of how the rising power of the pirates eventually met the Royal Navy in outright confrontation.
(With a little magic, sex and romance thrown in just for fun.)
