I had to put my pretty precious Patches down?

I had to put my pretty precious Patches down, a week ago today. She was my baby girl and a brother to my other dog Tobie, who passed away two years ago this Valentines Day. They are together now at "Rainbow Bridge". Tobie was diagnosed with kidney disease. That morning he fell down trying to pee. That's when I knew it was time. The very same thing happened with Patches, but in the exact same place where Tobie fell. I feel like Tobie was calling her home. Two weeks ago she didn't want to go on walks anymore and the day night before she had a seizure. So, the next morning after she fell down I took her to the vet. The vet wanted $800 to $1000 to check her out because she was very dehydrated and weak. They couldn't guarantee anything. I didn't want her to die in the hospital, alone and without me. So I decided to let her go peacefully with her in my arms. She was 13 1/2 years old. Did I do the right thing? :(

Yes. I know it isn't fair that you had to. I has to put my beloved pug down on November 25 of last year. It feels like you felt guilty, because you feel like they have more life in them to push on. They do, But they'd just make it worse. Tobie and Patches was suffering, and so was my pug. They're now out of natures harm, and happy and healthy at the rainbow bridge playing with the other dogs. It's a good thing that you stayed with her when she went. That's very loyal of you. I'm sure your dog thanked you. If your dog wanted to be with anyone when he's faint of life, he'd want to be with you. Dogs are loyal to us, And you where loyal to her. Not many people do that, unless they had a strong bond with their pets. Don't feel bad. You did the right thing. They're happy and healthy now. Stay strong. ♥

Oh thats so sad of course you did the right thing sweetie. I know how it feels to put a pet down theres always that thought in the back of your mind you did the wrong thing but in that case you really did pick the right thing. If you did choose to give her the treatment well 1 it might not work and 2 putting a 13 year old dog through all of that when shes so old ill and fragile just isn't fair. It would of put her under so much stress and she would of been very scared. You did the right thing and i really respect that because theres so many ignorant owners out there that would put there pets through all of that. R.I.P i'm sure you gave her a wonderful life and don't let anyone tell you different!

I'd say definitely. Don't beat yourself up over this. It hurts, but it's part of giving your heart to a dog.

The price quoted by the vet was high, I'd suggest but without knowing the whole picture, is impossible to say. In any case, she had a good long life, and was clearly in trouble, so you gave her peace. Well done.

My decisions were always taken the the advice of a trusted vet - if there was anything still to be offered, they would. But the bottom line is always down to YOU knowing when your dog has had enough and it sounds as if this was the case.

Yes sweetie, you did the right thing. To put a 13 1/2 year old dog through all kinds of diagnostic tests would have been cruel and painful. I'm so sorry for your loss.
