Did God act ethically in allowing Satan to ruin Job's life over what was essentially a bar bet?
Is that moral behavior?
One of Many: "holding or manifesting high principles for proper conduct."
4skins4david, Job1:1 "In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil." It was because of his uprightness--his piousness--that he was singled out for this mistreatment, not because he needed to be "refined." There's no indication that his children were big sinners either. There was nothing just about Job's treatment.

We don't really know what actually went on in that scripture conversation. If we take it at face value, then it would seem that God allowed trials to come upon Job according to his ability to bear those trials. That is totally in accord with the New Testament that there is no temptation taken you but such as is common to man. For God is faithful and will with the temptation prepare a way for you to escape it. God will not tempt us above what we are able to bear. That is what happened to Job. He suffered great trials but he was able to bear them and was blessed for his faithfulness. Satan lost, as he will lose all of his contests with God.

(The bible, like all scriptures, is a collection of lesson-teaching fables, fictional stories that use allegory, metaphor, and similes to teach lasting lesson about the foibles of bad human behavior.)
The story of Genesis teaches us about bad behavior, the story of Moses teaches us about hope, the story of Jesus teaches us about the gentler and worst side of human nature. All those stories have a purpose. To teach lasting lessons about why we should strive to avoid giving in to our animal instincts and war-like nature.
The whole point of the Job story was, in my opinion, to let the people know that no matter how bad things get, it's not the end of the world, God gave us the character and strength to overcome even the worst that life (and The Devil) has to offer, and it ain't over until you're dead.
In other words, much about our life experience is beyond our control (disasters, war, local unrests, weather, tragic senseless accidents, etc) and no matter how bad it gets, we as people have the mental capacity to put it all behind us and move on, and survive.
It's a lesson teaching story, that says "Life (the Devil) is going to throw a lot of krap in your direction, better learn to deal with it with courage, honor, and dignity.
Despair is a sin, in other words. Do not despair.
