Question to those who own a dishwasher?

How do you tell if it's dirty or clean?

We have a reversible magnet that says dirty on one side, clean on the other.

Every one has there own technique. The magnet is one good way. Removing all the clean dishes as soon as possible after a load is run and then gradually putting dirty dishes in is another. Opening and checking for dirty dishes before adding more is another idea. If one person does all the dishes they generally know. I am sure others have a different solution.

I have never heard of this reversible magnet or any other aid for telling you dishes are clean. It's hard to know sometimes even if it did run a cycle if you stack some oily dishes too close together they won't turn out clean and then you wonder if it ran. Clean dishes are usually smooth because of the dry jet so you know that way, the glasses have some water on the top of them from the jets, and the plastics are not slimy.

I believe these magnets are to inform someone who comes to the dishwasher looking to place a used dish of some kind if the contents of the dishwasher have been washed or if it contains all dishes that NEED to still be washed.

When I take the dishes out, I change the indicator to "dirty". When I start the dishwasher, I switch it to "clean".

I need one of those badly. So far, my household's method is to ask everyone until someone is located who knows. (Not terribly effective. :)

We can't just look at them because we rinse them off so they appear clean. (Doesn't everyone do that? I thought so but apparently not.)

Could try opening the door and look at them.
