micro-managers at work?

My boss is a super micromanager. I can't stand him. His cup is always half empty. Work used to be enjoyable but is now burdensome. Any suggestions ?

The most important skill no matter what job you have is to be able to communicate constructively with others.

speak to your boss and ask him how he sees your work.

are you doing a good job?

are you making a lot of mistakes?

what is the nature of his issues with your work.

In other words be direct but not confrontational or argumentative.

keep things professional and rooted firmly in the job and the work.

    NOTHING PERSONAL.

Appear to sincerely seek his input as to your performance.

If there are genuine concerns your boss has then address them constructively.

    NOTHING PERSONAL.

if it comes out that the boss has real issues address them or give written notice in a calm manner.

It could equally turn that your boss will understand that he is being intrusive and the two of you will be more understanding of each other in the future.

Report to him frequently with updates and ask him his exact expectations for the assigned project (or whatever). If he is a hoverer, tell him that it is hard for you to concentrate with someone standing over you and that when you have finished the task you will bring it to him, show him, etc. These type of people are usually very anxious in general and usually feel the subject of blame when things go badly; hence the micromanaging (whether it is true or not). Remember, crap rolls downhill and if he is being over-managed by his superiors, it all rolls back to you. You can't change him; only how you react to him.
