What exactly goes on after a dark wood stain?

My kitchen and bathroom cabinets were all stained the same color back in built in 1992. I noticed the subcontractors on filp this house tv show, they lightly sanded down the kitchen cabinets and applied a dark wood stain to renew the look. All of my woodshop projects were sprayed with lacquer thinner after the wood stain if I am able to recall some years ago. This was back in the 1970s. What do I apply to my cabinets after the dark wood stain today? I dont have a air compressor

I am guessing that Lacquer, not lacquer thinner, is what you remember being sprayed on back in the 70's. Lacquer is a common finish used for cabinets and some furniture. It goes on fast, dries fast, and gives a good look. It is not very tough, though. It has to be sprayed on.

For your project, if you want to do it yourself, I would suggest Minwax Wipe On Poly. It is a thinned down polyurethane that can be applied with a cloth. I have also applied it with a touch-up roller and a brush with good success. If you apply at least 3 coats, you will have a tough finish. Here is a video showing how to apply it...

    Good morning Edward B.,

I am still trying to figure out what year and model car that is? I have a 1974 Plymouth Valiant. I own two (2) rental duplexes. In fact, we first remodeled the kitchens back in 1970. I have refurbished the kitchens about three (3) times. I did it the old way using stain and then polyurethane. TIMES HAVE CHANGED.

Do what the first website tells you to do. You must remove all the doors. I also suggest you buy new hinges. The hinges are not that expensive. DO NOT OVER SAND. You do not have to take off all the old stain by sanding. Make sure the doors are smooth. Take my word for this. This new Minwax will cover all. The Minwax is the new combination stain and topcoat. It works.

Some of these kids may not know what Tack Cloth is? They do have it in the paint department. I suggest you get it. The tack cloths completely remove all your sanding dust. It will give your cabinets that smooth finish look.

Head for Home Depot or Lowes and buy MINWAX POLYSHADES. Pick out your color or try to match your present color. It BUSHES on. Do not use the foam applications. They are too weak. Apply two (2) coats. Let the coats dry overnight before applying the second coat.

Believe me; this new MINWAX is great and easy to use. I have used it on two (2) of the kitchens three (3) years ago.

The acetone has actually eaten away at the finish, not just stained it. Same as if you spilled it on your polished fingernails. You can try using some super fine steel wool (0000 or finer) to smooth out the mark. You will probably have to sand and refinish the top, tho.
