Why is my cat's tail curled?

I have a Calico cat that's about 13 years old. Since we got her as a kitten, her tail has been curled up in a little ball. We always assumed it had been broken and didn't heal correctly, but upon closer inspection, if you were to straighten her tail out, it would be about half the length of a normal cats tail. She's perfectly healthy, I'm just really curious as to what might have caused this "mutation" of sorts.

It's just a birth defect. Most likely this cat was inbred. Short, twisted, hooked tails are VERY common in feral colonies since there's such a small gene pool.

It's one of the kind of tail mutations that can happen with cats and she just happened to inherit it.

Tail mutations have popped up in cat populations in different places in the world.

There's a kind that's more in Western cats and a kind more in Asian cats.

About half of the cats in some Southeast Asian countries have kinked tails that can range from just a little bend toward the end, to a tail that is very curled up and shortened like yours. It's due to the bones in the tail being curved. Just like with your cat, it's not something that causes health problems. It just makes them unique.

My cat's grandfather came from Thailand and he has a very kinked tail. Some of his descendants have had straight tails and some have had kinked tails.

    my cat has that too!

it's a genetic thing. it's not bad but it's not good either it's just a thing that happens. I like to call it a double jointed tail but of course that's not the real name. It's really called a hypermobile tail. people can have it too like when some people can bend only the tip of their finger instead of half or the whole thing. This is a rare thing, so be proud of your cat!

oh and person above me: that's normal it just means the cat is happy :)

Our cat's tail is quite similar, when her tail is up vertical about 1 and a half inch from the top of her tail is curled.

It could be a birth defect me being an EXTREME CAT PERSON wouldn't care.

I just for some reason can't stand the hairless cats
