If your documents are saved on Microsoft Office 2010, what needs to be done.....?
As mentioned in my previous question, I cannot access my important documents through Microsoft Office 2010.
With that being said, if I should download another program such as "Open Office", will the files automatically stay where they are and I can open the files, or do I need to transfer the documents over to a new program?
I would assume that I have delete the Microsoft Program off of my computer, correct?
I just think this is all bull dinkies that we have to pay for something that is so critical when using our computers.
You pay TOP dollar for a new computer then asked to renew a program that can cost over $300.00. REALLY?
What other advice can you give me so that if and when I change over to a new program, the process will be easier?

1. You don't need to delete MS Office from your computer. You can have every single word processing program on your computer that you want.
2. Files that are saved in a word processor typically save to a generic location (usually, on Windows, that's just "My Documents" or "Documents"). They are not saved IN the program itself, meaning you can freely move them around your computer and open them with any program you want. The file is 100% independent from the software.
3. I would recommend Libre Office, since Open Office sold out, but yes, if you download one of those programs, the files will stay where they are... since the files are completely independent of the software. You do not need to transfer any files over to a new program, because the files are not embedded in the program.
Well, other people thought it was ridiculous, too, and that's why Open Source software is always gaining in popularity. You don't need to pay for MS Office if you don't want to, just use an alternate program.
There's really nothing to know, except that menus in other software might be located in different places, and terms might be slightly different. You also need to pay attention to what you're saving a file as. By default, MS Word will save a file as a .doc or .docx (depending on which version you're using). But if you're using LibreOffice, it might default to .abc. You just need to make sure when you're saving the file the first time you do a Save As... and change the file type before you click OK. Even if you forget, you can still just do Save As and change the file type again.

You can also keep your Microsoft Office if you want another office suites. If you don't want to pay for office software, i know Kingsoft Office which is free and supports most MS file formats, which contains all frequent used functions, download, install and uninstall quickly and without any questions.
