What do we know regarding " Sanctification" in the bible?
Two questions regarding sanctification.
1. In our position, seen in these two verses.
2 Thessalonians 2:13
But we ought to thank God always concerning you, brothers beloved of the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning unto salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth,
1 Peter 1:2
Chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father in the sanctification of the Spirit unto the obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
2. Sanctification dispositionally, inwardly.
1 Thessalonians 4:4
That each one of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,
1 Thessalonians 5:23
And the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly, and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Thank you for taking the time to study up and for posting to these two questions.
Please note that the first two verses, this sanctification was before we were saved and even born.
The last two occur after we are saved and is very subjective and inward.
Hi Lee. Tnx for responding. Yes, I'd like for you to tell me a bit about each aspect of sanctification. I left 2 verses regarding each aspect. :)

Yes... it is beautiful to know that *God thought of us and touched all of our thoughts lovingly* (I was love-struck a gain... on this late last night, how God touches our thoughts... His light travels throughout all that is dark and touches our thoughts... it is so true, marveling into considerations, how MUCH God loves man>kind (you me, us them, whosoever) knowing He enters our hearts through our minds... so we can know His Thoughts for us, not against us > this O cures us as His Daily Shew-bread in this Day) ... This is why we respond, as we are caressed by all that is God... because His Hand touches our minds, hearts, souls.
The Truth is... is this we are conceived from the beginnings in God's heart of hearts as His Beloveds... His fires flame the ice surrounding our hearts and He moves the stones that have tombed us. We first see His Light, then come into His Light, which is Pure, Holy, Brilliant and venture forth in His Rest. His Brilliance and Radiance does the work in us... He looks at us with such love, we consent! You know last night I was mediating on this... how His Love touches us, in our thought life... and in this.. how then the changes begin, as God begins to speak to us as only our Father can. He knows us... yearning for us to know Him, not just of Him. As we ponder each of us, how our lives took on His Grace, we do know He touched us... in returning to Him, His Truth washes over us, bathes us, taking all the stains away... with each swoosh of His loving hand. Those poisons are taken out of us... one by one... in this we by Him are set aside, as we come into agree and one accord. In this the rebellion dies from within, beauty rises purified!
You know sis... it's kinda like this... life can wound us with such death, that we are buried by those kinds of things, people, who had abandoned Him... our memories are scarred, death comes in, to overshadow whose image we were made in. We have no control over the memories or all the conditions that left us with pain though we make effort to be free and clean from these, yet God does! God begins to stimulate in us... stir us... His Holy Word cleanses... through His Sovereign power operating the Holy Spirit, who shares with us the Gospel of God's Truth. Our amazing witness and friend is His Holy Spirit, who continuously speaks with us wooing us to God's Throne, until each clouded thought vanishes, each hurt is cleansed oiled,as God anoints then seals those wounded parts.. until that which is imperfect has been made perfect, until God says it is done in us.. finished!
God's kind of clarity begins to rule in us, govern us, and in this process we are set aside... we consciously awaken in all of this yearning for more... so much so, that deeply felt we have new convictions... the utterance of God's Spirit conforming us... bringing us into new certainty that God knew us before we were born... that it is by God's enabling power we are set aside... so none of us can boast in anything other than Him. It is God who gives us the hope, faith, joy and crowns of life...gathering us in His Worth, as keepers of His Faith. I love 1Thess 4:4... as God transforms us to produce as His Ambassadors. rightly dividing situations, making applications... that He finds pleasing.. as those who show growth in His Tree of Life... living by those Holy Governance's that come from God's Throne. Not out of a dutiful spirit but from a Rejoicing Spirit... that yearns and rejoices with all the angelic host surrounding God... (much could be said on this ... as we don't see them saying... Love, Love, Love. > we see them declaring nonstop ... Holy, Holy, Holy... so this is important for us to glean! (see Rev: 4: 8)
God knows us, planned us, calls us... touches our hearts and minds through His Spirit...Sanctifies us...the more we consent... the fuller our experience is with God... who is HOLY... full of loving grace and peace. may His Holy Peace rest upon and in us... Amen God's favor... brings us everything our hearts most desire. The Bride of Christ is to be Blameless. How do we move into this Blameless state... by joining with God, how do we help the Sanctification process.. by setting those things... that have brought us to shame and harm... through the atonement given through Jesus Christ... we are also called to join this sanctification... through the setting aside our vessel... this is a very beautiful process as all the parts of our rebellious carnality come into God's touch and are made alive... in this we become One with God... in all our ways... reporting to God's Spirit as spirits who are quickened by all that belongs to and from God. I am becomes gladdened in us... it's so beautiful to seek God's approval in this... being alone with God brings us to much fruit...needful for having our seared conscience to be made whole... so that we can be counted as those who can share this fruit of God with whom God entrusts us with in His Path...
Source(s): Sin may sear us... yet God comes to our rescue... to cleanse away that sin, to hold us lovingly, while we cry, to gently wipe away our tears... His Holy Spirit does all of this, as we are made clean our wounds receive His Oils of anointing... we rise as new creatures, who know the Presence of God... being sealed by His Grace, Love, Peace, and Truth... Jesus Christ said He is the Way, The Life and the Truth... God's Abundance is found in Christ. Amen - Anonymous7 years ago
It was only after I became a Christian that I understood the significance of 2 Thessalonains 2:13 and 1 Peter 1:2. I had no idea that it was God who had called me, or that God had known from before the foundation of the world that I would respond to that inward call and turn to Him. Only when I look back on my life can I see how God, through the Holy Spirit, had been at work in my life to bring me to a place where I recognised I was a sinner in need of a saviour. Praise God that He is Sovereign and He saw fit to save a sinner such as me.
With regard to the ongoing process, it is comforting to realise we have a helper, that the Holy Spirit continues to refine us and help us to overcome our sinful nature. It's still a struggle, even 17 years on, but the beliver can have confidence that the work started in us will not fail.
Such an uplifting subject. Thanks for asking.

Sanctification - to be set apart (i.e. holy) has a broad and a narrow meaning.
The narrow meaning: living out the set apart life that God has declared for us. It is that part of one's life in Christ where the person lives out / lives through the forgiveness and mercy of Jesus' death and resurrection. It includes both changing behavior and also a growing understanding of the depth of one's sin.
The broad meaning is similar to the term justification -- to be declared righteous / holy.
In both uses of the word, the death and resurrection of Jesus is central. It is Jesus action on the cross that declares us holy (broad use) and it is the power of God that works through His word and sacraments to bring to fruit the work(s) in His children that are set apart (holy) in this world.

I really don't think there is a difference. Sanctify means to be set apart. But not just set apart. But to be set apart for a holy purpose. When we are sanctify we are separated from the world by God for His holy purposes.
