Do I get a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid or a 2003 Nissan Xterra?
I am choosing between these two cars. The Escape has 178k miles and the Xterra has 107k miles. They both appear to be in good shape, but I know that there are many problems with the Xterra. I'm also worried about electrical components on the Escape. Please answer if you have info that will help me decide one way or the other.
I'm also considering a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder with 152k miles.

Truth is, that's a ton of miles for either of these vehicles.
It's impossible to answer without knowing the maintenance history of either vehicle, but they are both going to be a huge gamble, on paper.
An Escape, gas or hybrid, is living on borrowed time with that many miles. A new hybrid battery will run you a couple grand if it needs to be replaced soon - probably will cost more than the car is worth.
The 2000-2004 Xterra is famous for radiator, engine and transmission issues right around the 120K mile mark. You may get lucky, but maybe not. A rebuilt transmission will cost you a couple grand so make sure you get it inspected by a professional to see if it was properly maintained.
Plus, the Xterra gets crap gas mileage and is awfully uncomfortable on long trips.
I think the Xterra is a lower risk if they are equally priced and it checks out, mechanically.

Of the two I think the Nissan would be the better choice but you need to have it inspected by a good mechanic before you purchase. Older Hybrids such as the Escape have the potential for major problems. Good Luck

I watch the show House Hunters where a couple has to choose between 3 houses. Different subject but same issue. Many times my answer to the couple on House Hunters is the same answer I give to you "keep looking". Look for that needle in the haystack. Wait for that SUV that belonged to a little old lady with 60K miles. It's out there be patient.
