Leave and Liberty+proper attire?
Hi guys, just a quick question here.
So I'm slated for Paris island on feb 10 to enter the usmc
May 19 I attend lav crew training in camp Pendleton, San Diego
My recruiter has given me the impression that while basic will suck San Diego becomes "like" a civilian job in terms of hours and that after I finish training I will have ample opportunity to participate in the nightlife in San Diego. I'm excited however I was curious if this is necessarily true or if I'm more likely to be spending all my "free time" on base
Also, looking around for this I came across a liberty attire thread and I was curious if this applies to reservists when not on base (ie students like myself) when they go to class or social events at their college(I know I shouldn't dress like a bum, but something tells me I'm not going to be tailed to class to make sure I'm wearing my hat properly)
Any knowledge on these topics you can give is great, thanks for taking the time to respond to my question

short answer: sort of.
you will still be in a training status which does not mean you will be able to party like it's 1999 every weekend. you will have duty, you will have mandatory study periods you will have military responsibilities on top of your schooling.
furthermore lots of areas in SD and TJ are OFF LIMITS to military personnel and you must earn the right to leave base. assume the first 30 days it won't happen at all.
your instructors will tell you the off base dress code.

Camp Pendleton is an hour North of San Diego. Oceanside is the city that hosts Camp Pendleton, and it is not the greatest place on the face of the earth, not in my book, although I did learn to surf there. When you are not actively training as a Reservist, you are free to dress as you wish. You are not considered to be on liberty, but as a Marine you should always take pride in your appearance and behave accordingly. Taking the bus from Camp Pendleton to San Diego to go nightclubbing is doable, but it does take more than an hour, as the bus makes frequent stops and you have to transfer about a hundred times. Alternatives are getting a ride with a friend or taking the Greyhound.

Damn, no Mexico any more? That sucks.
Pendleton is in the county, but a good 35 miles from downtown. So long bus ride...
